The Statute of the Ukrainian Royal Family regulates the succession to the throne, regencies, abdications and governance of the House in Exile. The Statute in its current form was adopted by the Grandfather of HRH the Grand Prince in 2019, before his abdication.

The Succession to the Throne

The Statute regulates the succession to the throne on the principle of male-preference (cognatic) primogeniture. According to this, the firstborn son from the oldest line of the family always succeeds to the throne. Only if one line dies out does the next closest line to the family’s common ancestor take over. On the death of the head of the family, his eldest son takes on the responsibilities of Monarch and Sovereign of the House of Rurikovich-Chernihivskyj.

The Grand Prince can nominate the Hereditary Grand Prince who is entitled to succeed to the throne as his regent, either in the event of temporary incapacity or in preparation for the succession.
